Syllabus
Description
This EVO session covers a one-week discussion of four English for Specific Purposes content areas: Business English, Legal English, English for Science and Technology, English for Health Care. Each content week will have a moderator with experience in the field. The first week will cover self-introductions, and the last week will be a wrap-up. During each week, moderators will give a brief overview of the field: who the students are, what kinds of content are usually covered, what skills students usually lack, and exercises that are often used in the skills area. These exercises include demonstrations of various ways blended, face-to-face and online, teaching and learning approaches can be used. Participants will be invited to ask questions or post comments on the moderator's comments.
Target Audience
People, including educators, teachers, trainers, and consultants who use or are interested in using English for Specific Purposes in these four content areas, integrated with different types of technology .

Weekly Outline
Week One:
Introduction to the session and self-introductions from the participants. A warm-up activity / discussion based on the virtual lecture, Learn How to Learn about Your ESP Field, by Debra Lee presented in Week 2 of the EVO 2005 ESP session, ESL to ESP. A general introduction to the different types of Internet tools and social software to be used throughout the 6-week session.
Week Two
Business English for bankers: A Blended Communication Approach
Social Software to Connect & Learn: Using Blogs, Podcasting, Wikis, and online Conferences for branch Managers – A Pilot Project for the Gulf Bank of Kuwait

English for Medical Purposes
Using content area role plays and listening comprehension exercises to help health care students and practitioners improve oral skills. Using Turnitin to teach and learn paraphrasing of biomedical texts.

Wrap-Up. Conclusion and evaluation.
Moderators
Christine Parkhurst is an Associate Professor at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, where she has taught for over twenty years. She has also published and presented in the field of English for Medical Purposes.
Buthaina Al-Othman is an EFL and ESP instructor at the Language Center of Kuwait University, since 2001. She is a member of the Webheads in Action community online, since 2002. Recently, Buthaina has been engaged in developing and teaching blended, face-to-face and online, Business English programs for groups of bankers at a Financial Institution in Kuwait.
Debra Lee is currently a Senior English Language Fellow in Prague, Czech Republic. With a regional team, she is creating a multimedia language program for legal English. She has been teaching, writing materials for, and presenting on legal English for over twelve years. She is also co-author of American Legal English: Using Language in Legal Contexts.
Mark R. Freiermuth is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Faculty of International Communication at Gunma Prefectural Women's University. Besides his interest in ESP, he also interested in discourse analysis primarily of computer-mediated communication and simulations as a language learning tool. His research activities are a reflection of these interests.
